I had an awful day at University and remember digging my head deeper into my mothers’ shoulder as I cried that I hated studying Medicine. It was only my first year at Medical School, but a few weeks into the degree I already knew that it was not for me.

My Mother tried to comfort me through suggesting retail therapy – she had seen the most beautiful coat and knew that it was made for me. But I was just not in the mood. No coat or pair of new heals, frozen yoghurt or KFC Krusher would comfort me. My mother remained adamant that I needed the coat, so she convinced me to travel with her to Cresta Shopping Center. With a heavy heart and mascara running down my cheeks, I reluctantly walked down our staircase leading to the garage. I had no idea that in a few seconds time my life would be changed forever! As I entered the garage expecting my mother’s car, I came face to face to my new love – Firefly.

She was brilliant blue and draped with a large red ribbon. Her eyes were bright and shown LED lights. Her booty was cheeky and her heart was filled with drive. I treasured her from the moment I laid my eyes on her. Firefly was my new baby!

In the years that followed, Firefly and I went on many adventures together. She carried me to Plettenburg Bay holidays, camping trips and on adventures through the city. She sang me sweet worship songs on my way to work and remained loyal to me in 5pm Joburg traffic. She really was my baby.

In the early hours of February 2010, uninvited men took Firefly from our yard. My heart was torn as our separation was uncalled for and unexpected. I had to let her go and accept that my Firefly could only live on as a pleasant memory in my heart. It felt like betrayal when I started looking for a replacement, as I knew that there was no match for my Firefly. But I knew that adventures were waiting and I’d simply have to move on.

On a gorgeous Winter afternoon a Police Officer delivered the sweetest news to my ears: Firefly had been found! She was abandoned in a frosty field in Soweto – stripped to nakedness. But all that mattered was that we would be together again! They say, “If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, you know it has always been yours.” Firefly was mine.

I believe my love for her grew that day. It wasn’t just because we were reunited, but because I realized that she was a GIFT, my gift. Our next few years were voyaging through sunshine and cruising on roses. I grew older and wiser as she gained more and more kilometers. We were good to each other.

Today is the 15th of October 2015. It has been an awful day! Firefly flew me through the city to Sandton, where I was going to meet two lovely ladies for a job interview. I had no idea that this journey would be our last. A lady skipped her stop street and squashed Firefly in a single hit. Our final intimate moment was my chest smooching her steering wheel. It has been a tragic day that I never wished for, but I remain thankful that Firefly put my life before her own. My heart is saddened and in remorse as our adventures came to an end. I had no chance to prepare for this day, but all I can say is this:

Dear Firefly,

Thank you for the amazing memories and being a loyal friend.

You will be missed.

Love,

Binita

I would like to dedicate this story to my Mother and Father who bought me Firefly thereby commencing my independence. I am all too thankful for this gift! I would also like to consecrate it to all my praying friends and family, especially my Ouma Ronnies, who has always called upon angels to keep me safe. You mean the world to me.
