Often, my purpose for creating art is to express the world inside me in pursuit of making sense of it all. Other times I purposely create art to protest a topic I feel passionate about. Who knew that pomegranates would change it all for me…?
Not so long ago I grabbed hold of the opportunity to exhibit my art at a pomegranate farmer’s market (Ubali Granaat Fees). Not having any pomegranate-themed art (I mean, obviously! Why would I make art as meaningless as a fruit?) I decided to jump right into it. Thou. Shalt. Create. Pomegranate. Art. I found this mission quite challenging. I could not get myself to sketch and then paint what seemed like just a red, mostly round ball, with a pretty little flower-looking stalk. It went against everything I believe in as an artist. Art is meant to move… to stir… to change! It was only when I decided to abandon these inner vows and break my own rules that I realized that there were none.
I allowed myself to dream. I allowed myself to get carried away in the possibilities. It was now that this red, mostly round ball, with a pretty little flower-looking stalk became a teacup, and then a tub, a dress, an umbrella, a night sky… Pomegranates came to life and took me on a liberating journey where anything was possible! Pomegranates have made me dream again (and challenged my beliefs regarding art)!
I would like to extend the invitation to you too. Come run with me! Come dance with me! Come live with me and come dream with me! Life becomes a very beautiful and joyous place when we break free from the refrains of what is expected and step into our God-given gift to dream.
Ps. Perhaps on my next adventure I’ll sail away on a banana-boat and see where it’ll take me… Or I’ll ride on a naartjie-wheeled bicycle down a hill where anything-goes…
